A year ago today the British Steel Corporation closed the Consett steelworks, ending a long tradition of iron- and steel-making that stretched back 140 years. Overnight the reason for a whole community's existence was removed. Consett now lives in fear of beconn ing a ghost town.
Ten thousand new jobs are needed over the next five years just to keep the area's unemployment down to the national average.
Over the last year this programme has followed the fortunes of the town through the eyes of ex-steel-workers and a dedicated group of job creators who are trying to sell the town to businessmen.
