' Of all the arts, for us the cinema is the most important', said Lenin. Today, he would turn in his Moscow mausoleum if he could see the state of the art in Poland. There, film has become a powerful force of social criticism, and party propaganda fills no cinema seats. But until recently much of the best work of Polish documentary film makers was censored. Films which got too near the truth about the realities of working life, social problems and recent Polish history were put ' on the shelf', as the Poles say. Now Solidarity is pressing hard for an end to censorship and these films are emerging into the daylight.
Anthony Smith , Director of the British Film Institute, introduces extracts from some of them and talks to a young Polish film maker whose recent work is still ' on the shelf '.
