A Pattern of Building, written and presented by Alec Clifton-Taylor 1: Warwick
A second series of six programmes about small historic towns, in Which ALEC CLIFTON-TAYLOR looks at both famous buildings and small domestic houses, and lays emphasis on the traditional English building materials - stone, brick, wood and plaster.
The showpieces at Warwick are the magnificent castle and the famous Beauchamp Chapel in St Mary's Church, both built of the local sandstone. But there are many other fascinating buildings - some timber-framed like the famous Lord Leycester Hospital which survived the disastrous fire of 1694, and others brick, in which the town was largely rebuilt in the century that followed. The legacy of the 20th century is not so happy. The concrete County Council office block destroys an incomparable view of the church.
