Donny MacLeod journeys the length and breadth of the Soviet Union. Rarely does a foreign film crew gain access to rove freely around this giant land. But, after months of planning and negotiation, MacLeod and his team travelled 25,000 miles to film the wide variety of people and cultures that make up the Union. He arrives first at Yalta on the Black Sea.

A Pattern of Building
Written and presented by Alec Clifton-Taylor
2: Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland
'Seductive? Charming? No. But what this town has is strong character, and for its fortifications and its bridges, it is unique '.
The local sandstone here is rather sombre and there are few really distinguished buildings. But the Elizabethan ramparts are of European significance, the Vanbrughian Barracks are the earliest in Britain, and Robert Stephen -son's Border Bridge is one of the glories of the railway age. More recently, there has been excellent restoration of near-derelict houses but some of the craftsmanship leaves a lot to be desired: Even the carved lions on the gate piers ' says ALEC CLIFTON-TAYLOR , seem perplexed'.
