The Image of Our Choice
Thirty Years of Independence
It is barely 30 years since the last British troops left a newly Independent India and ended 300 years of British presence there.
James Cameron , who has spent much time in India both before and since Independence, looks at the films that the BBC has made there since 1948. They reflect the problems and changes that India has faced in this time but they also show our own particular picture of India as a country of Maharajas, mystics, hippies, temples, poverty, over-population, Mrs Gandhi and steam trains. That is the image of our choice.
The Indian film-makers, in contrast, were concerned with industry and development. Together these films give a picture of India in the 30 years of Independence.

the music of Scriabin
In the last programme of The Lively Arts Ashkenazy season, the focus is on the Poem of Ecstasy by Scriabin, scored for a massive orchestra and played tonight by the Philharmonia Orchestra leader CARL. PINI conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy
Kenneth van Barthold tells the fascinating story of Seriabin's life, taking us back into the exotic world of pre-Revolutionary Russia and Scriabin's own mystical obsessions. ASHKENAZY also gives a guided tour of Scriabin's piano music, adding his own perceptive comments on the composer's life and philosophy.

starring Anne Marie Ottersen
Froydis Armand , Katja Medbee
Anja Breien 's entertaining picture of three wives on the spree in Oslo provides a neat counterpoint to John Cassavetes 's Husbands, shown last night. Kaja, Heidrun and Mie meet at a school reunion: schnapps and snapshots awaken old friendships and by the next morning they have decided to take time off from their jobs and domestic routines.
