He punches photographers, attacks referees, curses and pummels his players. He has even blacked his own eyes, while in a rage. He's the most colourful figure in American sport today. Woody Hayes is coach to the Ohio State University football team, The Buckeyes. He believes in only one thing - winning. College football, in America today, is big business and one of the most dramatic aspects of the American sporting scene. Top teams, like The Buckeyes, pack stadiums wherever they play and are followed by millions on television. And the key figure in these contests between American gladiators is the coach, the man who, in order to survive, must drive each year's team to victory.
WOODY HAYES may be a man of tyrannical rages, but he still produces winning teams and puts more players into pro-football than any other single college. He works a seven-day week. 52 weeks a year. Football is his life. He's 65 now and no one can really believe he will ever retire.
