Narrated by William Franklyn
In 1976, 15 men set sail out of Hawaii, bound for Tahiti. Crowded on to a twin-hulled Polynesian canoe, they were determined to prove that their ancestors, over 2,000 years before, could have sailed the same immense distances with no navigational aids other than an uncanny knowledge of stars and seas. However, the greatest problems the venture faced were not those of the vast ocean but of human conflict - even before the voyage started.

"After 30 years, I return to Egypt to see again places which, either from a literary or a personal point of view, meant something to me or marked me or moved me, and to see what traces, if any, remain of that extravagantly coloured world I painted in 'The Alexandria Quartet'."
In a sequel to the Greek "Spirit of Place", Peter Adam takes Lawrence Durrell back to the setting of his four famous novels.
Their journey starts in Alexandria and follows the Nile to Aswan and Abu Simbel. Durrell revisits Wadi Natrun, Fayum, Luxor and the Valley of the Kings. He talks about his beliefs, his craft and his experiences as a writer: and evokes Egypt's two landscapes - the desert and the great river.
