Saving Chichester Harbour: part 1 A solar-powered radio beacon leads vessels into one of the world's most beautiful harbours - and one of the best organised. Ten years ago it faced chaos from the conflicts of fishermen, naturalists and invading yachtsmen.

Tonight's programme in The Lively Arts tells the story of a remarkable journey made by the composer/explorer, David Fanshawe
That journey inspired a unique composition - energetic and exuberant, like the composer himself. Fanshawe's music incorporated actual ' field ' recordings, discovered as he hitch-hiked with a tape recorder 2,000 miles, from the Mediterranean down to Lake Vic toria and Mount Kenya, and from the mountains of West Sudan to the coast of the Red Sea. The film-first shown on Omnibus
- retraces the places he visited and the people he met; an enormously colourful range, from belly-dancers in Cairo to Masai warriors, and shows how these impressions sparked off the creative imagination of a young Englishman as he travelled through a modern Africa that is changing constantly.
Stunning to look at and glorious to hear.
(EVENING STANDARD)
An extraordinary, fascinating and unique film. (DAILY EXPRESS) Quite the best plctorialisation of a piece of music I have ever seen. (SUNDAY TIMES) A fresh and personal statement.
