Elisabeth Bergner
Strange, shy, childlike, demonic, a soul aflame, a magic creature ... some of the descriptions that have been given to Elisabeth Bergner.
Born in Vienna, she was already acclaimed as a great actress on the Continent in the 20s. She took English audiences by storm in 1933 in the stage production of Escape Me Never and then by a magical performance in James Barrie 's last, ill-fated play The Boy David. Ever since then, her appearances on stage, film and television have been very special occasions for vast numbers of people who respond to her unique talents. She talks to PATRICK GARLAND about highlights in her career and some great influences in her life.
