Trevor Philpott reports on The Making of a Policeman:
The Bramshill Flyers
It's a cherished principle of our police service that every officer must start as an ordinary bobby on the beat. Normally promotion is slow and hard to win. But some way has to be found to attract bright brains into the police force, and to make sure that they are given the chance to reach positions of authority. There is just one way to leap up the ladder, one way by which a few carefully-selected young men can reach inspector's rank within four years of joining the force. Each year, out of 100,000 men in the UK forces, just 30 become ' Bramshill Flyers.'
