In the year 1900 Freud published The Interpretation of Dreams, the British Labour Party was founded, Mafeking was relieved and Queen Victoria reigned happy-and-gloriously. The 20th Century was beginning. What parent did not have special hopes for the child born that year?
The series singles out six personalities in the arts, each with a different and personal view of the century, but with two things in common: the year of their birth and their exceptional creative energy. Tonight's programme features Helen Bradley , who has recreated a vision of her childhood in paintings which recall the child's happy and total preoccupation with the present moment. Her pictures are full of colour, abound with characters, remembered incidents and fantasies and present an extraordinary panorama of her Edwardian England.

Trevor Philpott reports

He may seem not much more than a boy. A few weeks ago he may have been a lorry driver, a brick-layer's mate or an invoice clerk. But if he's wearing the helmet and the uniform you expect him to know the answers - to take control - whether it's a brawl or a snatched handbag, a fatal accident or a murder.

What kind of men are they who want to become policemen? What training do they get? What conditioning do they go through? Just how wonderful can we expect our policemen to be?

Gentle Ghost - an Eye to the Future
Man must change himself before his world alienates him from himself.
Gentle Ghost provides employment; services from Architecture to Astrology; evening classes, a restaurant and a counselling, advice and information service. The theme of the programme is modern man's headlong flight from nature, both his own and that surrounding him, and the need to reverse this process. Despite its subject, however, the programme is a refreshing departure from traditional didactic format-half creative montage of documentary and symbolism, half ' live ' studio discussion between members of Gentle Ghost and those of similar but longer established- organisations.
Made by GENTLE GHOST in co-operation with the BBC Community Programme Unit.

The Men Who Made The Movies
This week BBC2 highlights the work of one of Hollywood's great-directors. HOWARD HAWKS'S special gift is for stories about groups of men overcoming danger and hardship, whether cowboys, racing drivers, airplane pilots or lawmen. In this programme, made for American television, the 79-year-old veteran director, regarded by many as John Ford 's only equal as a maker of action movies, reminisces about some of his most famous films. With excerpts from Dawn Patrol, The Crowd Roars, Twentieth Century, Only Angels Have Wings, His Girl Friday, Air Force, The Big Sleep, To Have and Have Not, Red River, Rio Bravo and Hatari.
