Twenty-five years ago Anthony Powell started work on what has proved the largest literary enterprise by an English writer since the war. The 12th and final volume in his novel sequence A Dance to the Music of Time is published today.
He talks to JULIAN JEBB about this huge comic panorama of English life which stretches from before the First World War to the early 70s and is populated by more than 300 characters, the most famous of all being Kenneth Widmerpool.

The Oldest Wonder - The Pyramids
Narrated by MAGNUS MAGNUSSON
Cheops coming to reign over them plunged into every kind of wickedness. He ordered all the Egyptians to work for himself. And they worked to the number of a hundred thousand men at a time, each party during three months.
Were the pyramids of Egypt built by slave labour, as Herodotus suggests? Is Von Daniken right in believing that the Ancient Egyptians could not have erected the 2,300,000 blocks of the Great Pyramid in less than 600 years? Some of the myths are destroyed and some of the mysteries still remain in this month's programme.

Unheard Voices
Tonight: Unemployed from Ellesmere Port
In this week of special Open Door programmes, groups of people - whose attitudes and ideas are not commonly given direct expression in the media - are invited to put forward their views on the state of the nation... or anything else they care to talk about.
In all Open Door programmes the public decides the content. Technical and creative help is provided by the Community Programme Unit of the BBC.
