From kedgeree to gingerbread, from the childhood delights of the aniseed ball to the more sophisticated gin and tonic - so many of the foods we now think of as English owe their origins to other countries. And that goes for the most famous of all our beverages - the British cuppa.
It is not just food but people as well. From the Huguenot refugees who settled around Spitalfields in the 17th century to the Jews of the late 19th century, we have been bequeathed foods we now regard as our own.
In this programme Derek Cooper explores a few of the many good things that have flowed up the River Thames and examines the profound effect they have had-and are still having - on the Taste of Britain.

The Jess family are emigrating from Ulster - today. They follow in the wake of ten million people from Ireland, Scotland and Eng- , land, who between 1800 and 1900 J left their homes and looked for a new life in Canada and America. Why did they go?
This film uses songs of the time and the words of letters, diaries, government reports and the stories of their descendants, to portray the situations some of them faced and how they made up their minds to go.
