Michael Berkeley talks to the Amsterdam-based poet and writer Anna Enquist.
Music has always played an important role in her life: her first novel, The
Masterpiece, was inspired by Mozart's Don Giovanni , while a Bach keyboard partita is central to her second book, The Secret. Her other choices today range from Chopin studies and a Brahms cello sonata to Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Britten's Serenade, and songs by Heppener based on poems by Ezra Pound. John Lewis (1920-2001). Best known as the pianist and musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet for some 40 years, John Lewis was also a prolific composer. His output included ballets, film scores and works for symphony orchestra. He was also a great innovator in the field of jazz education. Geoffrey Smith presents the first of a four-part profile of this most erudite musician in which he talks to Lewis about his upbringing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and about his early work with Charlie Parker , Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

Ian McMillan presents a cabaret of language starring two verbal troupers, the proverb and the sonnet. Alice Oswald reports on the growth of the Sonnet Tree, poems incorporating ideas, words and images suggested by listeners, and reads the first sonnets. Ian swaps proverbs with his guests - including Adeline Yen Mah , who explains that the history of China is revealed through its proverbs - and appeals for original ones from his listeners. There's a report on Iraqi writing and the audio cartoon returns with Peter Bledvag and Static in the Attic. GOING DUTCH
