Mttsuko Uchida
"Liszt is a real problem to me ..." For more than 25 years, pianist
Mitsuko Uchida has concentrated on the music of just a few composers - Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven and the Second Viennese School - and has avoided music of the standard 19th-century repertoire. She reveals to
Joan Bakewell why she just will not play some of the most popular works ever written for piano - works by Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov.
Visitors to Britain
With Richard Baker.
4: Chopin. Many musicians who visited Britain from abroad have done very well, but Chopin was one who hated this country. Already terminally ill when he arrived, he found little understanding of his art among his patrons. Prince Albert, however, was a great supporter, who would stand by the piano and watch as Chopin played. Music includes:
Chopin Nocturne in E flat, Op 55 No 2 Richard Goode (piano)
Piano Concerto No 2 in F minor
(3rd mvt) Maria Joao Pires , Royal
Philharmonic, conductor Andre Previn Ballade No 2 in F, Op 38 Artur Rubinstein (piano)

SOUNDING THE CENTURY
Gershwin pursued his serious symphonic goals in two richly scored pieces first performed in 1932: the Second Rhapsody for piano and orchestra, and the Cuban Overture, inspired by a vacation in Havana and making use of Latin American percussion. The following year brought two further musicals -
Pardon My English and Let 'Em Eat Cake - but these failed to match his earlier successes. Rodney Greenberg also includes Gershwin playing his Three Preludes, and modern interpretations of his music by arranger Dave Grusin and by Ella Fitzgerald , who made landmark recordings of over 50 Gershwin songs.
