Richard Coles reports from Edinburgh on the opening of the new Museum of Scotland. The museum portrays Scottish history from prehistoric times - when the earliest peoples arrived in Scotland in around
8,000 BC - to the present day. The need for a museum devoted exclusively to telling the story of Scotland was first recognised in the fifties. Since then, ideas about the nature of museums and their place in national cultures have undergone huge changes, and the new building opens as Scotland approaches Devolution. Richard Coles and guests discuss the place the museum may have in reflecting and defining the changing nature of Scottish national identity. Producer Doug Traill-Stevenson
