With Donald Macleod.
Sebastian was a soldier who joined the Imperial army so he could help fellow Christians during their persecution by the Romans. He was soon promoted to be one of the bodyguards of the emperor Diocletian, but when his beliefs became known he was sentenced to death. Diocletian ordered Sebastian to be shot to death with arrows, and, when this did not kill him, he was beaten to death and thrown into a sewer so the Christians could not honour his body as a martyr. As well as being patron of archers and soldiers, Sebastian is also the patron saint of the Brazilian city Rio de Janeiro.

Wozzeck
A concert performance of Berg's gritty opera given earlier this month at the Royal Festival Hall, London.
Wozzeck was premiered in 1925 and is now a central work in 20th-century opera. Based on Georg Buchner 's
-,play Woyzeck, the opera follows the inevitable decline of a poor soldier who submits to harsh treatment from his superior officers in order to sustain his mistress Marie and their illegitimate child. Under stress, he loses the balance of his mind when he learns that Marie has been unfaithful.
Tragedy ensues. Sung in German.
