On 2 November 1939, the Consul, hero of MALCOLM LOWRY 'S novel Under the Volcano, finally submits to the disintegration of his marriage and his life. Fifty years on, Jan Gabrial , Lowry's first wife, talks about the stormy relationship which fed the author's autobiographical fiction: 'Malcolm would drink to get drunk,and that I couldn't understand at all. It was as though he were embracing his own destruction.' Reader
