Emil Gilels, one of the greatest Russian pianists of this century, was among the first prominent Soviet artists to appear in the West after the Second World War. In 1957, the year of his British debut, he recorded for the Third Programme, and he enjoyed a broadcasting career here until 1984, the year before his death.
