The Final
The inter-university music quiz reaches a climax in today's programme from the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Tommy Pearson tests the finalists' ability to recognise lost chords, music played backwards, triple concertos and tone rows. And they will need their encyclopaedic musical knowledge for individual and specialist rounds and the quick-fire final round.
Music from Wagner's opera Lohengrin transcribed for piano by Liszt and played by Leslie Howard. Disc
Gotterdammerung Wagner 's epic Ring cycle, the greatest venture in operatic history, reaches its climax in Richard Jones 's extraordinarily imaginative staging for the Royal Opera. Music director
Bernard Haitink concludes his first complete Ring, with Anne Evans as Brunnhilde and Wolfgang Fassler as Siegfried.
The lovers struggle to keep alive their dream of a world ruled by love. Their adversary is the evil Hagen, sung by Kurt Rydl , the half-human son of the Nibelung dwarf Alberich. Hagen has inherited his father's lust for world domination based on force - and he knows how to exploit the inherent corruption of humanity. Hagen plots Siegfried's murder but he cannot escape the final conflagration, as Briinnhilde realises that the only way out is self-immolation and the twilight of the Gods - Gotterdammerung. 5: Dramatis Personae
Theatres are machines that generate emotion, but many new buildings went wrong: the actors somehow felt alone. Consultants are redesigning stages that link the performers to the punters and vice versa - by ripping out interiors and wallpapering the sides with people. But should we destroy our recent past? Do we, the actors, or the architects own buildings?
With Sir Phillip Powell on Chichester, Richard Pilbrow on his redesigns, and Sir Denys Lasdun on the National Theatre.
Peter Erskine , one of the most sought after drummers in contemporary music, and John Abercrombie , described as the most highly individual guitarist of the post-Coltrane era, have often played together. But for their recent Contemporary Music Network tour they each had their own trios. Peter Erskine was joined by British pianist John Taylor and Norwegian bass player Palle Danelisson.
John Abercrombie favoured a very different line-up of Dan Wall (Hammond organ) and Adam Nussbaum (drums).
Chris Parker introduces the concert recording and talks to both Erskine and Abercrombie.
