THE THIRD AT 50
Pevsner was one of a remarkable generation of German Jewish art historians who fled from Hitler in the thirties and made Britain their home.
By the time he gave his Reith lectures for the BBC in 1955 on The
Englishness of English Art, he was a member of the Establishment: a professor at London University, Slade Professor at Cambridge, and a key figure in journalism and publishing. He was knighted in 1969, yet remained an outsider - a foreign, professional architectural historian at a time when the subject in England was controlled by gifted amateurs.
Pevsner is remembered for his books, particularly his ambitious series The Buildings of England. Joe Mordaunt
Crook follows Pevsner to some of the buildings he admired and some he disapproved of and discusses the man and his influence with sons Thomas and Dieter Pevsner , architectural historians Bridget Cherry , John Harris and Gavin Stamp , and writer Simon Jenkins.

The century is coming to an end. Why worry? Richard Coles explores the nature and function of anxieties, whether from new technologies or old moralities, with contributors to a new collection of essays on the millennium edited by Sarah Dunant and Roy Porter. And there's some more immediate judgement and prediction as this year's Booker Prize shortlist is announced. Night Waves reviewers measure up the favourites against their own literary tips.
