Pevsner was one of a remarkable generation of German Jewish art historians who fled from Hitler in the thirties and made Britain their home.
By the time he gave his Reith lectures for the BBC in 1955 on The
Englishness of English Art, he was a member of the Establishment: a professor at London University, Slade Professor at Cambridge, and a key figure in journalism and publishing. He was knighted in 1969, yet remained an outsider - a foreign, professional architectural historian at a time when the subject in England was controlled by gifted amateurs.
Pevsner is remembered for his books, particularly his ambitious series The Buildings of England. Joe Mordaunt
