In the second of three documentaries charting the history of the Third
Programme and Radio 3, Humphrey Carpenter investigates how the Third captured the intellectual high-ground with talks by the likes of Isaiah Berlin and Bertrand Russell. The Hilda Tablet plays of Henry Reed offered a lighter touch, and the Third broadcast one of the most famous programmes ever - Under Milk Wood. In 1957, cuts to the Third provoked a high-profile protest campaign. Today's programme includes the first broadcast of a speech by TS Eliot as part of the protest, in which he defends the rights of those who prefer the symphony orchestra to the dance band.
Meanwhile, the arrival of William Glock brought more contemporary European music to the network, leading to rumours that some British composers were specifically excluded.

Robert Hardy stars as Sir John Falstaff , Shakespeare's greatest comic creation, who sees it as his duty to educate Hal - the young Prince of Wales - in the vices of the tavern. When Hotspur leads a rebellion against the king, Henry despairs of his son's degradation and neglect of duty. The time has come for Hal to redeem himself. Part Two is broadcast next Sunday.
