David Fanning has been listening to the Danacord Carl Nielsen Collection, which contains historical recordings from the Denmark Radio Archive. They include performances of the six symphonies by three conductors whose approaches are close to Nielsen's own - Thomas Jensen ,
Launy Grondahl and Erik Tuxen. Also in the collection are recordings of the concertos, chamber music, keyboard works, and the operas Maskarade and Saul and David recorded by Danish casts. To complete the picture, David Fanning assesses some 1950s Decca and EMI recordings of the symphonies and concertos, recently issued by Dutton Laboratories.

Handel could have called this opera
Sibling Rivalry when he completed it in 1738. The work is written to a largely fictional libretto with a historical background - the title role is the figure of the Persian king Xerxes I. Set in about 470BC, the action centres around the rivalry between Xerxes and his brother Arsamene for the love of Romilda and, in turn, the rivalry between Romilda and her scheming sister Atalanta for Arsamene. Amastre and Ariodate help to sort out the ensuing mess. This performance was given last February in Munich.
