David Fanning has been listening to the Danacord Carl Nielsen Collection, which contains historical recordings from the Denmark Radio Archive. They include performances of the six symphonies by three conductors whose approaches are close to Nielsen's own - Thomas Jensen ,
Launy Grondahl and Erik Tuxen. Also in the collection are recordings of the concertos, chamber music, keyboard works, and the operas Maskarade and Saul and David recorded by Danish casts. To complete the picture, David Fanning assesses some 1950s Decca and EMI recordings of the symphonies and concertos, recently issued by Dutton Laboratories.
