Simon Rattle - Home and Away

on BBC Radio 3

Conductor Simon Rattle 's name is synonymous with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, but over the years he has worked with many other orchestras, both in this country and abroad. Michael Birkett presents an eight-part series looking at some of these collaborations.
4: Berlin Philharmonic Simon Rattle first conducted this orchestra in 1987 and scored an immediate success. Michael Birkett introduces Berg's Wozzeck Fragments and Suk's Asrael Symphony from a concert Rattle gave in 1992, and talks to players and the orchestra's intendant, Elmar Weingarten. He gets the critic's view of Rattle's relationship with the orchestra from Manuel Brug of Der Tagespiegel.
The Simon Rattle series Leaving Home is on Sundays at 9.00pm on Channel 4
