This week Donald Macleod is joined by conductor Odaline de la Martinez, an authority on this week's subject - Ethel Smyth. The composer studied at Leipzig Conservatory in 1877 under Heinrich von Herzogenberg. After some early chamber works, her British orchestral debut was with the Serenade in D, followed by the Mass in D, which was first performed by the Royal Choral Society in 1893.Â

York Early Music Festival
Lucie Skeaping presents a week of music from this year's York Early Music Festival, which this year celebrated the 500th anniversary of the birth of music printing. Today the New London Consort, directed by Philip Pickett , perform works from
Petrucci's first publication, Odhecaton, printed in 1501, and the Palladian
Ensemble play music from the age of Monteverdi. And every day this week, performances by finalists from the Early
Music Network Young Artists competition.
