This week Donald Macleod is joined by conductor Odaline de la Martinez, an authority on this week's subject - Ethel Smyth. The composer studied at Leipzig Conservatory in 1877 under Heinrich von Herzogenberg. After some early chamber works, her British orchestral debut was with the Serenade in D, followed by the Mass in D, which was first performed by the Royal Choral Society in 1893.Ã
