Today's two Proms from the Royal Albert Hall feature two of the world's leading chamber orchestras, one playing on period instruments, one on modern. This afternoon's concert marks the Proms debut of the period instrument group founded in 1981 by Frans Bruggen, whose delight in musical colour and adventure has made Rameau and late Haydn specialities. Beethoven's boldly symphonic concerto is played by a soloist who is equally at home on period and modern instruments.

Thomas Zehetmair (violin), Orchestra of the 18th Century, conductor Frans Bruggen

This month marks the centenary of the birth of the great American novelist F Scott Fitzgerald , author of The Great Gatsby, Tender Is the Night and The
Last Tycoon. To mark the anniversary, Julian Evans retraces three decisive journeys made by the author, whose fantastic creativity depended so fatally on his own perceived failures: his disastrous marriage to Zelda, his difficult relationship with Hemingway, and his turbulent last days in Hollywood. With contributions from Harold Bloom , Jay Mcinerney , Alfred Kazin , George Plimpton , Brendan Gill , and the author's friends Budd
Schulberg and Frances Ring. Producer Noah Richler

Martyn Wade's play about the composer Gerald Finzi (1901-1956), starring Hugh Ross as the composer, Janet McTeer as Joy Finzi, and Anna Massey as Finzi's mother.

Poetry was often the source of Finzi's elegaic and beautiful music, which captures the spirit of the English countryside. He decided at the age of 11 to become a composer and gained the confidence to pursue his chosen profession from his marriage to an exceptional woman.

Jo Shinner focuses on the music of the Orkestar Shqiponja de Tirana, from
Albania. After four centuries of Turkish rule and 50 years of the Hoxa regime, Albania's traditional music has only recently emerged on to the world stage. The Orkestar Shqiponja de Tirana was one of the first groups of musicians to take advantage of their freedom after the ending of postwar Communist rule.
