Today's two Proms from the Royal Albert Hall feature two of the world's leading chamber orchestras, one playing on period instruments, one on modern. This afternoon's concert marks the Proms debut of the period instrument group founded in 1981 by Frans Bruggen, whose delight in musical colour and adventure has made Rameau and late Haydn specialities. Beethoven's boldly symphonic concerto is played by a soloist who is equally at home on period and modern instruments.
