Donald Macleod explores Salieri's work as composer for the Imperial Chamber in Vienna.

Donald Macleod charts Salieri's early years in Vienna, focusing on his position as composer for the Imperial Chamber and his operatic works.

In the second programme Donald Macleod surveys Salieri's beginnings as a composer in Vienna. Whilst employed as Composer for the Imperial Chamber, Salieri would have been responsible for writing suitable chamber music, and we hear the Cassazione that was likely to have been performed during royal banquets. Salieri, working with his mentor Gassmann at Vienna's opera house, was also offered the opportunity to compose an opera. Opera was to be the arena in which he made his biggest mark, and we hear two extracts from his early works Armida, and La fiera di Venezia.

BBC Proms 2009

A Prom featuring the BBC Symphony Orchestra performing a new piece by Detlev Glanert, which offers a foretaste of his opera The Wooden Ship. Denis Matsuev, winner of the 1998 Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition makes his Proms debut in Rachmaninov's variations of Paganini's famous Caprice.

The programme concludes with celebrated Shostakovich interpreter Semyon Bychkov conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich's Symphony No 11. Written in 1957, the work ostensibly commemorates the failed anti-Tsarist uprising of 1905, but under the surface it rages at the Soviet authorities.

Mariss Jansons and his Dutch orchestra perform Haydn's Military Symphony, composed on his second visit to London in 1794-95, at a time when England and Holland were allied with Austria against republican France.

According to an early review, the slow movement - graphically portraying 'the hellish roar of war increase to a climax of horrid sublimity' - was greeted with repeated cries of 'Encore! in which the Ladies themselves could not forbear to join.'
