Donald Macleod traces Salieri's successful career in the world of opera, including two important commissions on the recommendation of Gluck.

Donald Macleod in this third programme traces Salieri's highly successful career in the world of opera. On the recommendation of Gluck, Salieri was invited to Milan to compose L'Europa riconosciuta for the official opening of La Scala. During his tour around Italy, he also got time to compose other works, and we'll hear his Piccola Serenata written at this time. Later, Salieri was offered another notable opera commission, again on the advice of Gluck - a work for the Paris Opera. Once in Paris, he journeyed to Versailles to perform for Marie Antoinette. The programme ends with part of the final act of Les Danaides, which was dedicated to the French Queen.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra perform Xenakis's Ais, a work confronting the transience of life and the finality of death. A searing setting of ancient Greek texts by Homer and Sappho, with a wildly wide-ranging vocal line of powerful elemental utterances, it features a solo percussionist pitted against the orchestra. The concert concludes with Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony from 1945, a work that seems almost to laugh off the horrors of war.

As the oil wealth in Abu Dhabi is being diverted to large new arts projects, Anthony Sattin explores the attempts there to 'buy culture'.

As a centre with vast new museums and performance spaces grows out of the dust in Abu Dhabi, Anthony Sattin investigates the attempts of the oil-rich rulers to 'buy culture'.

The ambitious project, called Sadiyaat, involves the creation from scratch of a 'culture island', created by superstar architects Frank Gehry, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and Jean Nouvel. It involves expertise brought in from the Guggenheim and the Louvre as well as liberal arts teaching from the Sorbonne and New York University.

But the plans have bought protests, with objections to the 'plundering' of European museums' treasures for oil money. Fears of censorship have also been raised. But is this prejudice or justified fear?
