Donald Macleod charts Salieri's formative years, focusing on the loss of his parents, and good fortune of being discovered by the composer Florian Leopold Gassmann.

The much maligned Antonio Salieri, mainly remembered today for supposedly poisoning Mozart through jealousy of the younger composer's talent, is the focus for this week's Composer of the Week. This rumour of murder has travelled over two hundred years, inspiring verse by Alexander Pushkin, an opera by Rimsky-Korsakov, to Peter Shaffer's film "Amadeus". But is it right that this once highly celebrated composer should be remembered for an unsubstantiated rumour? Salieri was at one time the most famous composer in all Europe, with the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II as his patron. He received offers of work from the King of Sweden, and even dedicated one of his works to Marie Antoinette. He composed over forty operas, including a work premiered for the official opening in Milan of La Scala opera house. Amongst Salieri's students, which he always taught for free unless they came from wealthy backgrounds, were Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and even Mozart's son Franz Xaver.

In the first programme, Donald Macleod looks at Salieri's formative years, including the loss of his parents early on, and the miracle when he was discovered by the composer Florian Leopold Gassmann, and taken from Venice to Vienna. We hear a specially made recording by the BBC Singers of the Missa stylo a cappella, documented as being one of Salieri's first compositions - and one which was never performed in the composer's lifetime.

A specially-commissioned memoir from comedian Alexei Sayle, who grew up in Liverpool and has good reason to remember archetypal British bank holidays.

A specially-commissioned memoir from comedian and author Alexei Sayle, in celebration of bank holidays.

As the son of a train guard and union official, the Liverpool-raised Alexei has more reason than most to remember the bank holiday. It meant that the Sayle family could travel all over Europe by rail for free. But it also meant that often holidays were spent in the English seaside town that was hosting the Annual General Meeting of the National Union of Railwaymen, and the only foreign interest was provided by fraternal delegates sent from SNCF, the French railway.

Alexei recalls the cherished passes that allowed him in to all the local attractions free. He remembers the strange nature of the meetings themselves - like rock festivals 'where the stars...were balding alcoholics in ill-fitting suits, talking gibberish'. But come the annual dinner dance, they revealed themselves as sharp and fluent, masters of the jive and the waltz. 

But at the age of 14, Alexei wasn't so keen on the meetings anymore, especially when the union meeting was in Southport, just a few miles from home. So he committed a daring, meaningless and highly significant act.

Mariss Jansons conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in some of Duparc's finest songs. Upon his death Duparc left just 13 songs, yet each is a gem of textual subtlety and melodic inspiration; lustrous-toned Czech mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozena sings her own selection.

Ravel's pastoral ballet Daphnis et Chloe, commissioned by Diaghilev in 1909, the year he met Stravinsky, is based on an ancient erotic novel. The second suite begins with a sunrise and ends in an orgy.

Norman Lebrecht talks to Jonathan Miller, a high-profile figure in British arts and intellectual circles whose work over the years has embraced medicine, satire, religion, television, theatre and opera direction.

Coming from a London Jewish background with a father who was a pychiatrist and a mother who was a writer, Miller initially went into medicine before becoming involved in the 60s satirical movement along with Peter Cook and Alan Bennett. This led to an invitation to work in television and then the theatre before he made his debut in the 70s directing opera. But Miller never left medicine behind, working on TV series like the Body in Question and Madness which reached large audiences in the UK and America.

Miller reflects on the way his career has been borne out of a series of invitations, his feelings about his Jewish upbringing, the world of opera and his atheism.

Jez Nelson presents a gig by four pioneers of free jazz and improvisation: saxophonist Steve Williamson, drummer Roger Turner, keyboard player Pat Thomas and trumpeter Roy Campbell. The show features the first set from their London Jazz Festival gig in 2008, when the quartet played together for the very first time.

Williamson, Turner and Thomas are stalwarts of the British avant-garde music scene, with over a hundred years of collective experience in improvised music. Campbell is based in New York and has collaborated with David Murray, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor and John Zorn.
