Donald Macleod discusses whether there is any truth in the rumour, and traces the impact Salieri had on the world of music. The Requiem composed by Salieri, has been specially recorded by the BBC Singers and BBC Concert Orchestra for this programme. It was first heard at Salieri's own funeral, where the entire musical establishment turned out to pay homage to the great man.

The Scottish Ensemble and Tenebrae in MacMillan: Seven Last Words from the Cross. Ravel: Petite Symphonie a Cordes (Rudolf Barshai - viola).

The Scottish Ensemble team up with the British chamber choir Tenebrae to perform James MacMillan's masterpiece, the Seven Last Words from the Cross which was originally commissioned by the BBC for holy week and written specially for the Scottish Ensemble. The programme also features an arrangement for string ensemble by Soviet viola player Rudolf Barshai of Ravel's String Quartet.

From Bernini's architecture and sculpture in Rome, the playful gardens at Versailles, to the grand dome of St Paul's Cathedral and the music of Monteverdi and Bach, he discovers that new ideas about perspective, capturing movement and the infinite all play a part in the baroque vision.

'The Baroque was always a style I'd associated with vulgarity and excess. But in this programme Iâve discovered how much control and structure underpins the spectacle of the baroque. The dramatic and sensational effects of the greatest baroque architects like Borromini and Bernini are founded on sound mathematical principles. Painters like Caravaggio and Rubens are battling with the same problems as Newton and Leibniz in their attempt to capture bodies in motion. And the extravagant sounds of Monteverdi and Bach would not be possible without the mathematical development of new ideas of temperament. The Nash Ensemble and Diego Masson celebrate the 80th birthday of American composer George Crumb with three hauntingly beautiful pieces.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the first manned mission to the moon, mezzo-soprano Hilary Summers sings Night of the Four Moons, a work composed by Crumb during the Apollo 11 flight. Crumb often incorporates theatre into his work and Vox balaenae (Voice of the Whale) draws inspiration from the songs of humpback whales for which the three performers on stage are required to wear masks to efface their human presence. Soprano Claire Booth leads a septet of performers in Ancient Voices of Children, a highly expressive cycle set to verses by Federico Garcia Lorca.
