Three Proms themes come together tonight at the Royal Albert Hall - the anniversaries of Brahms and Schubert, and folk-music inspiration which is found in Chopin's second piano concerto, played by French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Brahms's vigorous choral writing makes an effective contrast to the serenity and repose of Schubert's symphonic Mass - a worthy successor to Beethoven.
