For well over a century. Gilbert and Sullivan have been synonymous with a perfect blend of good humour and good tunes - satirical fun in an operatic setting. In this three-part series of programmes,
Geoffrey Smith investigates some of the ways the composer responded to the librettist, building on and sometimes parodying music from Purcell and Handel to Verdi and Wagner. The first programme examines Sullivan's use of operatic imitations. Repeat

The Venetian commedia del'arte links tonight's performances of Stravinsky's tragicomic ballet and Korngold's erotic opera at the Royal Albert Hall , London. Korngold, born 100 years ago, was a most gifted prodigy, and his gory tale of Violanta, presented here in a concert version by Opera North, was written when he was only 17.
English Northern Philharmonia, conductor Paul Daniel
Stravinsky Petrushka (1947 version)
8.05 Sex and Death In the City of Dreams
Graham Fawcett uncovers the dramatic world of art and life in Vienna earlier this century and follows the thread of Erich Korngold 's operatic imagination from the Austrian capital to a mysterious Bruges and a kingdom of darkness. He arrives finally in medieval Venice, the setting of Violanta and its strangely resonating tale of seduction, vengeance, passion and murder. Readers Joe Dunlop and Jane Wittenshaw.

The War between the Worlds. In the fourth of five lectures, Professor Patricia J Williams examines the impact of racialised science on attitudes to race. She argues that scientific statements about black people, in terms of genetic attributes of. for example, athleticism or intelligence. nurture racial stereotyping; and she explains why it is so difficult to argue against what are supposedly scientific facts. First broadcast on Radio 4
