The story of a Chinese opera
The legend of the White Snake goes back at least as far as the T'ang dynasty and has parallels in Western myth and literature. As a tale and later as an opera, it was pushed into various shapes by time. taste and politics until its suppression along with other classical operas in the Cultural Revolution of 1966.
