This week Morning Performance celebrates the 65th birthday of Russian pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. Today's programme concentrates on his early career as a concert pianist and includes a from the 1960s of Prokofiev's Sixth Sonata and some recordings made during the 1955 Warsaw Chopin Competition, in which he finished second. Every evening this week Stephen Johnson introduces a concert from the BBC archives. Tonight the Philharmonia, under Carlo Maria Giulini, perform Bach's choral masterpiece, the B minor Mass, with Jenny Hill (soprano), Janet Baker (mezzo), Peter Pears (tenor), John Shirley-Quirk (baritone). This performance was recorded at St Paul's Cathedral on 10 July 1972, as part of the City of London Festival.
