Thomas Tallis was witness to one of the most turbulent periods ever seen in the history of the church, in which the country's faith seesawed between Catholic and Protestant, triggered by the larger-than-life figure of Henry VIII. There was an inevitable effect on all aspects of the church service, including music. Today Donald Macleod looks at some of the works Tallis wrote during the last years of Henry's reign, at a time when there was a move towards a new kind of plain speaking in music. Leading international musicians join the London Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the 75th birthday of the great cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich - "Slava" to his friends. The music ranges from Musorgsky and Ravel through Prokofiev and Rachmaninov, Bartok and Bernstein , to a birthday commission from Georgian composer Giya Kancheli, featuring violinist Gidon Kremer: 2 Great Slava from 2 GKs. Richard Coles talks to Tom Paulin about "The Invasion Handbook", the first instalment of his new poem about the Second World War, which opens with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles and charts the origins of the war through the collapse of the Weimar Republic and Hitler's rise to power.
