In November 1939 Hitler was almost killed by a bomb placed in a beer hall in Munich where he was due to make a speech. Throughout the war the Nazi government maintained that this assassination attempt was the work of a widespread conspiracy involving the British Secret Service. From documents now available, it emerges that it was the work of one man. a simple German artisan, Johann Georg Elser, with no political axe to grind.
