Stephen Walsh talks to Robert Craft in six conversations about the American writer and conductor's relationship with the composer Igor Stravinsky.
3: A Creative Crisis? -
Schutz, Schoenberg and Stravinsky
After the premiere of The Rake's Progress in Europe in 1951 and his visit to
Paris the following year,
Stravinsky faced a creative dilemma: he was no longer at the "cutting edge of the avant-garde". During the next few years, he gradually altered his method of composition to introduce some of Schoenberg's serial procedures. Was this Craft's doing? Was this development natural for a composer in his 70s? Including excerpts from Stravinsky's Cantata,
Septet, In memoriam Dylan Thomas and Agon and Schoenberg's Orel Satiren , Op 28.
