After the premiere of The Rake's Progress in Europe in 1951 and his visit to
Paris the following year,
Stravinsky faced a creative dilemma: he was no longer at the "cutting edge of the avant-garde". During the next few years, he gradually altered his method of composition to introduce some of Schoenberg's serial procedures. Was this Craft's doing?
