Presented by David Huckvale.
During the 40 years that followed the invention of the "talkie", composers produced highly expressive and original film music, much of which deserves a hearing in its own right. Today's programme features two composers with their roots in central
Europe: Viennese-born Max Steiner and Franz
Waxman, from Berlin. With excerpts from Steiner's music for Now Voyager,
King Kong, Gone with the Wind, Dark Victory and Casablanca and from
Waxman's scores for The
Bride of Frankenstein,
Rebecca, Sunset Boulevard and Taras Bulba.

Sinatra's Jazz
Frank Sinatra , who is 80 in December, is the favourite singer of many jazz musicians. In this four-part series, Mel Hill traces the part played by jazz and jazz musicians in the evolution of Sinatra's highly distinctive style. In 1940, after a brief period with the Harry James band, the singer joined
Tommy Dorsey , one of the top band leaders in America. Dorsey's legato trombone playing provided the model for
Sinatra's early vocal style. Producer Derek Drescher
