Russell Davies presents a 52-part history of jazz, from its earliest stirrings to the end of the millennium.

The so-called Jazz Age more or less ended with the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the onset of economic depression. Coinciding with the deaths of iconic pioneering musicians like Pinetop Smith, Bix Beiderbecke and Bubby Miley, it created a sense of loss which was echoed by a feeling that twenties chordal progressions were all played out.

A performance of Gluck's revolutionary opera, given in March in the Olivier Messiaen Concert in Paris, the city where it was first heard in 1779. Iphigenie changed the course of opera: out went stylised musical forms and cardboard cutout characters, in came vivid action and emotions.

Based on Euripides's play, the story takes place during the Trojan War and follows the fate of priestess Iphigenia (daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra), her brother Orestes and his friend Pylades, all under threat of death from Thoas, a barbaric tyrant, in Tauris, in the land of the Scythians.

Tonight, Jazz on 3 begins a series of monthly sessions featuring the best music being made on the UK jazz scene. Following the success of his drummer-less quartet which produced the bestselling Angel Song album, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler continues his exploration of unusual instrumental combinations in the company of two other equally innovative players - guitarist John Parricelli and flautist/saxophonist Stan Sulzmann. Released from the restraints of a rhythm section, each instrument takes chances with melody, rhythm and form, producing music that is fluid and diverse. There is also a preview of saxophonist Steve Coleman's new album, plus the second in the series of tributes to Duke Ellington, and Jez Nelson 's monthly roundup of new releases.
