Arnold Dolmetsch was born in 1858 and grew up in Le Mans in northern France. He studed music at the Brussels Conservatoire, where he encountered some enthusiasts for old instruments such as the viola da gamba. It was not long before he too became an enthusiast, laying the foundations for the early-music revival. He established workshops to build the instruments he loved to play and founded the Haslemere
Festival in 1924. Married three times, Dolmetsch found that his children inherited his musical inclinations.
