Esteves was for a long time lost in the shadows of the history of Portguese music, yet his legacy includes around a hundred religious works now in the archives of the Ajuda Palace and of Lisbon Cathedral, where he was mestre de capela during the first half of the 18th century. The vocal dexterity required for certain passages in his music makes us wonder how he would have fared as an opera composer. The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, director Stephen Darlington , perform a selection of Esteves's finest works, including the monumental Mass for Eight Voices. Repeat
