"simple Czech music" which suggest that he was not so simple and indeed not always so Czech. Today, she looks at some of his earliest successes, including his stirringly nationalistic Hymnus - specially recorded in English for this series - and a song cycle sublimating Dvorak's lost love into love for his country. Armed with a battery of new recordings, Simon Heighes takes a fresh look at the work of Telemann, one of the most extraordinarily creative personalities of the Baroque. 1: Gulliver's Travels. Telemann was a passionate European. His music not only drew on the sophisticated styles of France and Italy but was also infused with the energy of Polish folk music "in all its barbaric beauty", as he put it. Simon Heighes introduces a musical grand tour, including works written during Telemann's stay in Paris, the trilingual opera Orpheus, and the Gulliver Suite, with its outrageous Wild Dance of the Untamed Yahoos.
