In Graham Vick's new production, Schoenberg's opera of conflict among the ancient Israelites receives its first ever staging at the New York Metropolitan Opera. British singers star in the title roles of the two brothers who agree on the end - the unity of the human race with God's purpose - but fall out violently over the means of achieving it. The third main force in the opera is the Jewish people, personified in some of Schoenberg's most astonishing music as they are torn apart by their longing for a physical representation of God, a god they can influence by offering sacrifices.
