Love and Art. "Women, wildfowl, and a good libretto" is how Puccini is said, only half in jest, to have characterised his lifelong preoccupations. He certainly created a vivid gallery of memorable women, among them Manon Lescaut , Mimi (in La Boheme) and Tosca. Perhaps it was Tosca herself who best expressed the composer's real obsessions when she sang Vissi d'Arte, Vissa d'Amore. Repeat

Mozart's last opera, La
Clemenza di Tito, direct from
Glyndebourne. Composed to a commission - and with a bit of help from his friends - during the final months of his life, Mozart's stage swansong returns to his roots in the 18th-century opera seria, with a libretto by the godfather of the genre - Metastasio - and a traditional setting in ancient Rome. But the emotions that drive the characters are as much Enlightenment as Imperial - even the title gives a hint of the happy ending brought about by Tito's clemency to his traitorous friends. Presented by James Naughtie .
