Composed to a commission - and with a bit of help from his friends - during the final months of his life, Mozart's stage swansong returns to his roots in the 18th-century opera seria, with a libretto by the godfather of the genre - Metastasio - and a traditional setting in ancient Rome. But the emotions that drive the characters are as much Enlightenment as Imperial - even the title gives a hint of the happy ending brought about by Tito's clemency to his traitorous friends.
