Ernest Chausson (1855-1899)
Chausson's entire mature output was composed in less than two decades, between 1880 and 1899 when he was tragically killed in a bicycle accident. It would have been larger had Chausson not been such a slow worker and so severely self-critical. He was a pupil of César Franck, whose influence (as well as that of Wagner) was strong. But in his last few years Chausson showed increasing independence of style and particularly a tendency towards a restrained classicism that looks across to the early works of Debussy and Ravel.
