The Idea of the Child Saint
In the second of two talks based on her forthcoming study, Joan of Arc: The
Imane of Female Heroism, Marina Warner traces the radical change in Joan's status from Shakespeare's Henry VI through plays by Schiller and Southey, to recent works by DeMille and Claudel. In particular she examines the way Joan's character has been reshaped to meet a need for simple young heroines of unwavering purpose.
