Stravinsky and the Ballet
It was through his scores for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes that Stravinsky first achieved international fame. He was to go on composing for the ballet almost the rest of his life, and in fact it influenced his musical thinking in whatever form he wrote. Movement and dance were the mainsprings of his imagination. The ballets in these programmes were composed between 1911 and 1947. Jeu de cartes

Alexander Pushkin 's biographer. Henri Troyat ,- wrote:
'Translation of Pushkin is treason.' But a number of people have tried, notably Vladimir Nabokov , who produced an unrhymed English version of the Russian writer s poetic novel.
Then, a few months ago, a new, privately printed translation appeared, written in the same iambic tetrameters as Pushkin's original, and it was enthusiastically acclaimed by virtually all its reviewers.
It was by a retired diplomat, Sir Charles Johnston. who discusses the difficulties of his task and the ways in which he tried to resolve them

Visitors to the Freud household in Vienna were greeted not with a glass of sherry but with a well-chosen Jewish joke. According to Freud the joke fulfilled the same function as alcohol in raising the spirits.
